Unlike their ocean-going counterparts, the sockeye salmon, Kokanee are lake-locked and spend their whole lives in freshwater. Like the sockeye and other fish relatives such as trout, they make an arduous journey back to their home creek or river where they were born. Both males and females undergo an impressive physical transformation when spawning. Both sexes start out with slate-blue heads and backs. Females and males both end up with green heads and bright crimson red bodies–the males develop a large humped back. These fish like many others are in danger due to habitat destruction.
