Red-winged blackbirds are the most abundant North American birds. They are found in a range of habitats from fresh-water marshes to swamps to fields to wetlands. Males are easily distinguished by their jet-black coats and the bright red shoulder patches; the females are an array of brown and tan colors. The males are highly territorial and will defend their nest against much larger birds such as hawks and crows.
