Field poppies come from a family that includes 120 different species. Many are frost-tolerant plants that grow natively in temperate climates across Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, and Canada. These particular poppies grow well in disturbed soil where seeds can lay dormant for years until triggered by an event, where they can explode in great numbers.
Poppies were at one time associated with Demeter, the goddess of fertility and agriculture, it was considered good luck to have poppies growing in your field - it meant you were to have a bountiful year.
