Common terns are a relative of gulls but have long pointed wing and tail feathers. The shape of the wing and tail feathers have given them the nickname of ‘sea-swallow.’ They are the most common terns found in North America. They feed on fish and fly gracefully over the lakes, rivers, and the ocean, hovering over the water before they plunge down into the water for fish. The tern is listed as endangered and threatened in some states due to decline in numbers–thought mainly from pesticide poisoning.
