Whales are split into two main groups: toothed whales and baleen whales. Humpbacks belong to the latter group. Baleen is made up of 130-400 horny plates that are attached to each side of the upper jaw. The whale will take in large quantities of water and small fish into its mouth, then it will push its tongue against the baleen forcing the water out, but trapping the small fish inside. Humpback whales have a unique way of feeding called bubblenetting. A few whales will work together to surround large schools of herring (small bait fish) by blowing bubbles underneath the school of fish in a circular pattern. As the bubbles rise it scares the fish into a tight ball, where the whales can scoop them up easily.
