The Northern Anchovy is one of 150 species of anchovies worldwide. They have streamlined bodies, which are very flat, long, and thin. Anchovies have large mouths compared to their small bodies, most of the time you see them with their mouths open as they are swimming. They are filtering out tiny planktonic organisms from the water column. As plankton move vertically within the water column, the anchovies are not far behind. Anchovies are a vital element in the marine food chain, supporting many other larger species of fish, sharks, and whales, as well as being a key part to many coastal economies.
