This print was inspired by my hula brothers and sisters, the many connecting threads to the islands, the 'Aloha Spirit,' and by my Kumu. The littoral translation of 'Kaleialoha' is 'The Lei of Aloha,' but this print is also named for the spirit of the hula dancer and all the aloha and love and culture that hula dancers embody.

Leis are a symbol of love, of a spiritual meaning or connection, of healing, respect, and honor. The circle of the lei is thought to be symbolic of the circle of family, friendship, the halau, the community, the Hawaiian culture - it connects the love we feel for everyone and everything. Leis are not only made of flowers, but from seashells, seaweed (limu), grasses, feathers, and leaves.

The word 'Aloha' is a word that encompasses so much - it is considered by some to be one of the most important words in the Hawaiian language. It is a common word to be used in greetings and in goodbyes, as well as expressing love, but the word has a stronger meaning - it is a way of life. Aloha holds within itself all one needs to know in order to interact rightfully in the natural world. It is about 'coming forward, being in unity and harmony with your real self, spirit, and mankind. Being honest, truthful, patient, kind to all life forms, and humble.' - Kahuna David Bray.
